George Michael

George Michael was one of the defining pop voices of the 1980s and 1990s, first as one half of Wham! with Andrew Ridgeley and then as a hugely successful solo artist. Born Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou in London to a Greek Cypriot father and English mother, he built a career on a rare combination of soulful vocal power, sharp songwriting, and an instinct for melody that crossed effortlessly between pop, R&B, and blue-eyed soul.

His 1987 solo debut, Faith, cemented him as a serious artist beyond teen-pop, spawning hits like «Faith», «Father Figure», and «One More Try» and showing a deeper, more personal songwriting voice than his Wham! years. He continued to evolve across the 1990s with introspective, socially aware material, including «Freedom! ’90» and «Fastlove», balancing dance-floor grooves with emotionally direct lyrics.

Michael was also known for his collaborations, most famously the duet «As» with Mary J. Blige, and for hits like «Careless Whisper», one of the best-known pop ballads of its era. He remained a major cultural figure until his death in 2016, remembered as a songwriter of rare craft and a distinctive, powerful voice in modern pop music.
