He became a household name playing the title role in «Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory» (1971), where his rendition of «Pure Imagination» remains one of the most beloved musical moments in family cinema. Wilder also starred in Mel Brooks classics such as «Young Frankenstein» and «Blazing Saddles», and formed a celebrated on-screen partnership with Richard Pryor in films including «Stir Crazy».
