Gene Kelly

Gene Kelly (1912–1996) was an American dancer, choreographer, actor, singer and film director, widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in the history of the movie musical. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, where he ran his family's dance studio, he moved to New York and earned acclaim on Broadway in productions such as «The Time of Your Life» and «Pal Joey» before heading to Hollywood.

In film, he starred in landmark musicals including «Anchors Aweigh» and «The Pirate», and increasingly took on directing duties, often alongside Stanley Donen, while also choreographing his own numbers. His work on classics such as «On the Town» and «Singin' in the Rain» redefined how dance could be integrated into cinematic storytelling, moving away from the more theatrical style of earlier film choreography toward something more athletic, cinematic and character-driven.

Songs and sequences like the title number from «Singin' in the Rain», «Moses Supposes», «You Were Meant For Me» and «I Got Rhythm» remain touchstones of the genre. Kelly's working-class screen persona, combined with his technical mastery and inventive choreography, left a lasting mark on both dance and film that continues to influence musicals to this day.
