About the artist
Gary Numan is an English singer, songwriter, composer and musician from Hammersmith, West London, widely regarded as a pioneer of commercial electronic and synth-based rock. He first came to prominence as frontman of the new wave/punk band Tubeway Army before dropping the group name and launching his solo career, since he had written and sung all of the band's material himself.
His breakthrough came with the album The Pleasure Principle and the singles «Are 'Friends' Electric?» and «Cars», which brought heavy synthesizer hooks, often run through guitar effects pedals, into the mainstream and defined his instantly recognizable sound. Combined with his distinctive voice and androgynous, android-like stage persona, this made him one of the defining figures of early-1980s electronic pop.
Though his commercial peak came early, Numan maintained a devoted cult following for decades and has been cited as a major influence by numerous later artists across electronic, industrial and rock genres. His later work, including songs like «Metal» and «Intruder», reflects a darker, heavier evolution of his synth-driven sound, and his contribution to electronic music has been formally recognized with honors including the Moog Music Award and an Ivor Novello Award.
