Gabrielle is a British singer-songwriter from Hackney, London, who became one of the defining voices of 1990s UK soul and pop. She first drew attention with «Dreams» in 1993, a song built around a sample of Tracy Chapman's «Fast Car» that became an underground club hit before she re-recorded it as her debut single proper; it topped the UK charts and set the tone for a career built on warm, melancholic vocals over R&B and soul-pop production.

Her sound blends soulful, understated vocals with pop songcraft, often carrying a wistful, reflective edge rather than the more upbeat dance-pop of her contemporaries. She became known for wearing an eyepatch, a personal signature stemming from ptosis, a drooping eyelid condition.
