Fred Åkerström

Fred Åkerström (1937–1985), born Bo Gunnar Åkerström in Stockholm, was one of Sweden's most beloved visor singers (trubadurer), celebrated for his raw, expressive baritone voice and his interpretations of Swedish song tradition. He became a central figure of the Swedish visa revival in the 1960s and 70s alongside artists like Cornelis Vreeswijk, bringing a rougher, more emotionally direct style to a genre often associated with gentleness.

Åkerström is especially renowned for his interpretations of Carl Michael Bellman's 18th-century songs, which he recorded across several acclaimed albums, breathing new dramatic life into the classic Swedish poet-composer's work. He was also a committed political artist, and songs like «Kapitalismen» reflect his engagement with socialist and working-class themes that ran through much of his songwriting and choice of repertoire.

Beyond Bellman, he built a substantial catalogue of original and interpreted songs that captured everyday Swedish life, love, and social struggle, delivered with a distinctive gravel-edged intensity.
