About the artist
Franco Battiato was an Italian singer-songwriter, composer and film director from Sicily, widely regarded as one of the most original and intellectually ambitious figures in Italian popular music. Emerging in the early 1970s from an experimental and electronic-progressive background influenced by Stockhausen and avant-garde composition, he later moved toward a more accessible pop songwriting style without losing his taste for philosophical, mystical and esoteric themes drawn from Sufism, Eastern spirituality and European culture.
His commercial and artistic breakthrough came with the album «La voce del padrone» (1981), which included «Centro di gravità permanente» and «Bandiera bianca» and became one of the best-selling Italian albums of its era. Battiato continued to blend refined melodic pop with unusual instrumentation, literary references and social commentary across a long string of acclaimed records, while also composing for opera, cinema and other artists, and directing films himself.
Songs such as «La cura», «Voglio vederti danzare» and «E ti vengo a cercare» remain staples of Italian song, admired for their combination of emotional directness and intellectual depth. Battiato collaborated with figures including Alice, with whom he wrote and performed «I treni di Tozeur», and influenced generations of Italian songwriters who followed his example of merging pop craftsmanship with artistic ambition. He died in 2021, leaving a body of work still regarded as unique in European popular music.
