About the artist

Francisco Santiago (1889–1947) was a Filipino composer and pianist widely remembered as one of the pioneers of the kundiman, the traditional Tagalog-language art song built around themes of love and longing. Working in the early twentieth century, he helped elevate the kundiman from folk custom to a formal art-song tradition, setting Tagalog poetry to lush, Romantic-influenced piano accompaniments that drew on his classical training.

Among his best-known compositions are «Pakiusap» and «Madaling Araw», songs that remain part of the standard Filipino art-song repertoire, alongside his contribution to the patriotic song «Pilipinas Kong Mahal». Beyond song, Santiago also composed a Piano Concerto, which is often singled out as his most ambitious and accomplished large-scale work, showing his ability to move beyond the intimate kundiman form into orchestral writing.

Santiago's legacy rests on his dual role as composer and educator, helping formalize Filipino art music within a period when the Philippines was shaping a national musical identity distinct from both indigenous folk forms and imported Western styles. His kundiman settings continue to be performed and studied as foundational works of Filipino vocal music.
