About the artist
Francesco De Gregori is an Italian singer-songwriter from Rome, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in Italian cantautore tradition. Shaped by influences such as Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, and fellow Italian songwriter Fabrizio De André, he came up through Rome's Folkstudio scene, where he crossed paths with contemporaries like Antonello Venditti and Rino Gaetano.
He debuted on record in 1972 with the collaborative album «Theorius Campus», made with Venditti, before releasing his solo debut «Alice Non Lo Sa» in 1973, driven by the enduring hit «Alice». His follow-up, the self-titled «Francesco De Gregori», included tracks like «Niente Da Capire» and cemented his reputation for dense, literary, image-rich lyricism paired with understated folk-rock arrangements.
Over a career spanning decades, De Gregori produced landmark songs such as «Rimmel», «La Donna Cannone», «Generale», and «La storia», becoming a defining voice of Italian songwriting known for its poetic ambiguity and political undertones. His close artistic relationship with Fabrizio De André, including co-written material, further shaped his standing as a central figure connecting folk, rock, and the cantautore tradition in Italy.
