About the artist
Fra Lippo Lippi were a Norwegian synthpop and post-punk band formed on Nesodden, near Oslo, in the late 1970s under the name Genetic Control before adopting their better-known name (borrowed from a Robert Browning poem) around 1980. Built around the songwriting and vocal partnership at the core of the group, the band moved from an early post-punk sound toward the lush, atmospheric synth-pop that defined their most successful period in the mid-1980s.
Their signature sound blended romantic, melancholic melodies with shimmering keyboards and restrained, breathy vocals, placing them alongside other Nordic and European acts of the synth-pop wave while retaining a distinctly wistful, understated character. Songs such as «Shouldn’t Have To Be Like That», «Light and Shade», «Every Time I See You» and «Stitches and Burns» became the group’s calling cards, earning steady acclaim across Europe.
Somewhat unusually, the band found their largest and most devoted audience not in Norway but in the Philippines, where their ballads struck a deep chord with local listeners; a 1988 run of shows there reportedly sold out six nights in a row. The group was active through 1992, and though it effectively wound down after that, members have reunited sporadically in the years since for tours and recordings, keeping the Fra Lippo Lippi name alive for new generations of fans, particularly in Southeast Asia.
