Florante

Florante is a Filipino singer-songwriter and one of the pioneering figures of Original Pilipino Music (OPM), the folk-pop movement that flourished in the Philippines from the mid-1970s onward. He built his reputation on gentle, guitar-driven ballads and socially conscious folk songs that spoke to everyday Filipino life, patriotism, and simple sentiment rather than to grand romantic gestures alone.

His breakthrough came with «Ako’y Pinoy», a song that became something of an unofficial anthem of national pride and is still played at civic and patriotic gatherings across the Philippines decades later. He is equally remembered for «Handog», a tender love song that became a wedding-day staple, and for lighter, playful material such as «Sino Si Santa Klaus», which shows his range beyond strictly sentimental songwriting.

Florante’s style sits at the intersection of Tagalog folk balladry and the singer-songwriter tradition, favoring plainspoken lyrics and warm, unadorned melodies over studio polish.
