Flanagan & Allen

Bud Flanagan and Chesney Allen were an English music-hall double act who became one of Britain's best-loved comedy and singing partnerships of the twentieth century. Flanagan, born in London's East End to a Jewish immigrant family, and Allen, also a Londoner, met after both had served in the First World War and began performing together in the 1920s, eventually joining the ensemble known as the Crazy Gang alongside other variety comedians.

Their act mixed patter, gentle self-deprecating humor and sentimental or comic songs, delivered in an easy, conversational style that avoided the bombast of many contemporaries. During the Second World War their songs, including «Run, Rabbit, Run!» and «Underneath the Arches», came to capture the mood of ordinary Britons living through the Blitz and rationing, blending nostalgia with wartime resilience.

After Allen's retirement from performing in the late 1940s due to ill health, Flanagan continued as a solo entertainer and remained a beloved figure in British light entertainment, later recording the theme to the television series «Dad's Army». Together, Flanagan and Allen left a lasting mark on the British music-hall tradition and on the popular memory of wartime Britain.
