About the artist
Fitz and The Tantrums are an American band from Los Angeles that emerged from the city's indie soul scene in the late 2000s. Fronted by singer Michael Fitzpatrick and co-lead vocalist Noelle Scaggs, the band built its sound around Motown-inspired horns, punchy rhythms, and dual lead vocals, notably without a guitarist in their early lineup, which gave their retro soul-pop a distinctive, keyboard- and saxophone-driven texture.
The group's debut album, Pickin' Up the Pieces, released in 2010, established their throwback soul aesthetic, while More Than Just a Dream in 2013 pushed them toward a bigger, synth-pop-inflected sound with the breakout single «Out of My League». Their self-titled 2016 album leaned further into electronic pop, producing the hit «HandClap», which became one of the most recognizable pop-rock crossover songs of the decade thanks to its use in advertising and film trailers.
Fitz and The Tantrums are known for high-energy live performances and a knack for blending vintage soul influences with contemporary pop production, making them a fixture of both alternative and mainstream radio. Their evolution from a horn-driven soul revival act to a polished pop group reflects a broader trend of genre-blurring in 2010s popular music.
