Fisherman's Friends

Fisherman's Friends are a group of singers from Port Isaac, a small fishing village on the north coast of Cornwall, England, celebrated for keeping the tradition of sea shanties alive. Originally performing informally on the harbour front for locals and visitors, the group turned their passion into a wider career after a chance encounter with music industry figures led to a major record deal, an unusual turn of events for a group of working men singing traditional songs for fun.

Their repertoire draws on centuries-old maritime songs and shanties, work songs originally sung by sailors to coordinate labour aboard ships, alongside Cornish folk material. Tracks like «Keep Hauling», «John Kanaka» and «(What Shall We Do With The) Drunken Sailor» capture the collective, full-throated harmony singing that defines the genre, rough-hewn, communal and full of seafaring imagery.
