Fine Young Cannibals

Fine Young Cannibals were an English pop and R&B group formed in Birmingham in 1984, taking their name from the 1960 film All the Fine Young Cannibals. The trio consisted of vocalist Roland Gift alongside guitarist Andy Cox and bassist David Steele, both former members of the ska revival band The Beat. Their sound fused new wave guitar textures with soul and dance-pop hooks, anchored by Gift's distinctive, quavering tenor voice, which became one of the most recognisable in mid-1980s British pop.

The band's self-titled debut album in 1985 produced early hits, but it was their second and final album, The Raw & the Cooked (1989), that made them global stars. It topped the charts on both sides of the Atlantic and yielded two US number-one singles, «She Drives Me Crazy» and «Good Thing», both driven by sparse, punchy production and Gift's soulful delivery. «She Drives Me Crazy» in particular became an era-defining single, blending drum-machine minimalism with classic pop songcraft.

Despite their commercial peak, Fine Young Cannibals disbanded not long after, having released only two studio albums. Their brief catalogue, however, left a lasting mark on 1980s pop, admired for its clean production, genre-blending approach, and Gift's vocal presence, and the group remains a touchstone act of the decade's crossover between new wave and soul.
