Fever Ray

Fever Ray is the solo project of Swedish musician Karin Dreijer, best known as one half of the electronic duo The Knife. The project emerged after The Knife wrapped touring for their acclaimed 2006 album Silent Shout, growing out of demos Dreijer wrote alone before working with producer Cristoffer Berg, who had previously mixed The Knife's material. The self-titled debut album arrived in 2009, built around icy synthesizers, pitch-shifted vocals, and a slightly warmer, more organic texture than The Knife's work, anchored by the single «If I Had a Heart».

Dreijer's music under this name is inseparable from a distinct visual and vocal identity: masks, face paint, and heavily processed voices that blur gender and character, paired with lyrics exploring parenthood, identity, and unease. The project returned in 2017 with Plunge, a sharper, more overtly political and queer record featuring songs like «To the Moon and Back» and «This Country», followed by Radical Romantics in 2023.

Fever Ray occupies a singular place in electronic and art-pop music, influencing a generation of artists who blend synth-based production with theatrical presentation. Dreijer has collaborated with producers including Björn Yttling, Nídia, and members of Aavikko, and remains closely tied to the broader legacy of The Knife within Nordic electronic music.
