About the artist
Fei Yu-ching, born Zhang Yanting on 17 July 1955 in Taipei, with ancestral roots in Tongcheng, Anqing, Anhui Province, was a Taiwanese singer and television host regarded as one of the defining voices of Mandarin pop. He began his career after placing in a televised singing competition in 1973, releasing his debut album in 1977 and building a decades-long career known for elegant, restrained crooning rather than flashy vocal display.
His smooth, warm tenor and impeccable diction made him a favorite for sentimental ballads and songs rooted in classical Chinese poetic imagery, exemplified by enduring hits such as «一翦梅 (Yi Jian Mei)», the theme song for a mainland Chinese television drama that later became a global internet phenomenon decades after its release, and «新鴛鴦蝴蝶夢 (New Butterfly Dream)». Other signature songs, including «天之大 (Tian Zhi Da)» and «涛声依旧 (Tao Sheng Yi Jiu)», showcased his ability to bring understated emotional depth to melancholic and nostalgic material.
He received recognition including the Golden Bell Award for Best Male Star and the Jindingjiang Award for Best Male Singer, and remained a beloved figure across the Chinese-speaking world for his gentlemanly stage persona and refined vocal style that influenced generations of Mandopop ballad singers.
