Fastball

Fastball is an American rock band formed in Austin, Texas, in 1995 by Tony Scalzo, Miles Zuniga, and Joey Shuffield. Shuffield and Zuniga had previously played together, and after passing through other Austin-area projects the trio settled on the Fastball name following a string of discarded alternatives before establishing themselves on the city's vibrant mid-1990s music scene.

The band became known for melodic, hook-driven power pop and roots rock, blending jangly guitars with a strong sense of songcraft split between Scalzo's and Zuniga's contrasting writing styles. Their breakthrough single «The Way», built around a mysterious real-life news story, became a major radio hit and brought the band mainstream attention, showcasing their knack for warm, memorable melodies wrapped in tightly constructed arrangements.

Over the following albums Fastball continued to explore a mix of upbeat pop rock and more reflective, alt-country-tinged material, with songs such as «Out of My Head» and «The Girl You Pretended to Be» further displaying their range. Rooted firmly in the Austin music tradition, the band has remained a steady presence in American power pop, valued for its craftsmanship and its refusal to chase passing trends.
