Farida Khanum

Farida Khanum, born in 1929, is a Pakistani classical vocalist widely honored with the title Malika-e-Ghazal — the Queen of Ghazal — for her decades-long mastery of the genre in both Pakistan and India. Trained in the classical tradition, she made her public debut in 1950 and soon joined Radio Pakistan, where her expressive, richly ornamented voice earned her lasting recognition.

Her signature piece, «Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo», remains one of the most beloved ghazals in the South Asian repertoire, showcasing her ability to convey deep longing and restraint through subtle vocal control rather than dramatic flourish. Other enduring recordings, including «Woh Ishq Jo Humse Rooth Gaya» and «Dil Jalane Ki Baat», reflect the same emotional precision that defines classical ghazal singing at its finest.

Beyond her concert career, Khanum appeared in films and lent her voice to film songs, while remaining a frequent and celebrated presence on Pakistan Television. Her artistry helped preserve and popularize the ghazal form for new generations, and she is regarded as one of its greatest living exponents.
