About the artist
Falco, born Johann Hölzel in Vienna in 1957, was an Austrian singer widely credited as the first major German-language rapper. He began his solo career in the early 1980s after time in the band Drahdiwaberl, releasing his debut album Einzelhaft, produced by Robert Ponger, at age 25, which yielded the hit «Der Kommissar» and introduced his signature blend of spoken-word rap verses with sung pop hooks.
His global breakthrough came in 1986 with «Rock Me Amadeus», a song that fused new wave, synth-pop, and rap in tribute to Mozart; it topped the US Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks, an unprecedented feat for a German-language single that remains unmatched by any other German-speaking artist. The song's success cemented Falco as a defining figure of 1980s European pop, known for a theatrical stage persona and lyrics that mixed irony, Viennese wit, and social commentary.
Falco continued releasing music through the 1990s, exploring darker and more electronic territory on later records, while tracks like «Jeanny» and «Vienna Calling» further shaped his catalog and stirred controversy and acclaim in equal measure. He died in a car accident in the Dominican Republic in February 1998, shortly before what would have been his 41st birthday, and remains one of Austria's most celebrated and influential pop exports.
