Fairouz - فيروز

Fairuz, born Nouhad Wadie Haddad in Lebanon in 1934, is one of the most celebrated singers in the history of Arabic music and a cultural icon widely known as «the soul of Lebanon». She began singing as a teenager with Lebanese national radio in the late 1940s and rose to stardom in the 1950s, largely through her collaboration with the Rahbani Brothers, Assi and Mansour Rahbani, who composed and arranged much of her defining repertoire and shaped a distinctive Lebanese sound blending Arabic maqam traditions with Western orchestration and theatrical songcraft.

Her performances at the Baalbeck International Festival starting in 1957 cemented her as a pan-Arab star, and songs such as «Ahwak - أهواك» and «Zahrat El Mada'en - زهرة المدائن», the latter written in tribute to Jerusalem, became emblematic of her ability to fuse personal, romantic, and national themes. Her voice, marked by restraint, clarity, and emotional precision rather than ornamentation, set her apart from the more melismatic vocal style common among her contemporaries.

Over a career spanning decades, Fairuz recorded extensively across the Arab world, remaining a unifying cultural figure through periods of regional conflict, including the Lebanese Civil War. Songs like «Nassam Alayna El Hawa - نسم علينا الهوى» and «Kifak Inta - كيفك إنت» remain staples of Arabic musical heritage, and she continues to be regarded as a defining voice of Lebanese and broader Levantine identity.
