Fabrizio De André

Fabrizio De André (February 18, 1940 – January 11, 1999) was an Italian singer-songwriter from Genoa, widely regarded as one of the most important figures in 20th-century Italian music. His work is defined by poetic, literary lyrics that gave voice to society’s marginalized — prostitutes, outlaws, the poor, and the forgotten — treating them with empathy rather than judgment, a hallmark that set him apart from much of the popular music of his era.

De André’s songwriting drew on French chanson, particularly Georges Brassens, whose work he translated and adapted into Italian, as well as on Italian folk and Genoese dialect traditions. Songs such as «La Guerra Di Piero», an anti-war ballad, and «Bocca Di Rosa», the story of a free-spirited woman challenging small-town morality, became staples of Italian songwriting and are still studied for their narrative depth. «Il Testamento Di Tito» offered a subversive retelling of the Ten Commandments from the perspective of the thief crucified alongside Christ.

He also explored dialect and concept albums, working with collaborators such as Massimo Bubola and members of Premiata Forneria Marconi (PFM) on the acclaimed live reinterpretations of his catalog. Tracks like «Il pescatore», «Dolcenera», and «Don Raffaè» — his portrait of a Neapolitan prison guard and camorrista — further cemented his reputation as a master storyteller whose influence continues to shape Italian cantautorato.
