About the artist
Ex:Re is the solo project of Elena Tonra, best known as the singer and guitarist of the London band Daughter. She launched Ex:Re in 2018 with a self-titled debut album released on 4AD, produced by Fabian Prynn. The name plays on «regarding ex» and «X-ray», reflecting the record's origins as an intensely personal breakup album written over the course of a year.
Musically Ex:Re sits close to Daughter's atmospheric indie-folk but pushes further into stark, confessional territory, built around Tonra's hushed vocals, sparse guitar and piano, and slow-burning arrangements that favour mood over hooks. Songs like «Romance» and «Crushing» pair intimate lyrics with a subdued, cinematic production style.
While Daughter remains her main outlet, Ex:Re let Tonra work through a difficult period more directly and without a band format, and it has been received as a raw, diary-like counterpart to her main project's more polished sound.
