Eva Cassidy

Eva Cassidy was an American singer and guitarist from the Washington, D.C. area, celebrated for deeply personal interpretations of songs from folk, jazz, blues, gospel, and pop traditions rather than for original songwriting. During her lifetime she remained largely unknown outside the local club circuit, recording only a handful of releases including The Other Side, a collaborative album with go-go musician Chuck Brown, and the live album Live at Blues Alley. She died of melanoma in 1996 at the age of 33, before achieving any wide recognition.

Her posthumous rise to fame is one of the most remarkable stories in modern popular music. After BBC Radio 2 DJs Terry Wogan and Mike Harding began playing her versions of «Fields of Gold» and «Over the Rainbow» in the late 1990s, British audiences responded overwhelmingly, and the compilation album Songbird eventually reached number one on the UK charts years after its original release. Her interpretation of «Over the Rainbow», stripped down and emotionally direct, became one of her most iconic recordings and introduced her to a global audience who had never heard of her while she was alive.

Cassidy's voice was noted for its purity, control, and emotional restraint, allowing her to move fluidly between genres without ever sounding like she was performing a cover for the sake of novelty. Her catalog, assembled almost entirely from archival recordings after her death, has sold more than ten million copies worldwide and continues to influence singers who prize interpretation and vocal honesty over vocal showmanship.
