Ethel Cain

Ethel Cain is the stage name and artistic persona of Hayden Silas Anhedönia, an American singer-songwriter from North Florida. Anhedönia grew up in the small town of Perry, Florida, in a strict religious household, and drew on that upbringing to construct Ethel Cain as a fictional character embodying the American South and a mythologized American West. Before settling on the name Ethel Cain, she released music under earlier aliases, and her work moved from lo-fi bedroom pop toward a fuller, cinematic sound blending dream pop, ambient textures, shoegaze guitars, and country and Americana influences.

Her breakthrough came with the concept album Preacher's Daughter, which traces the fictional Ethel Cain's life and death across a loosely narrative arc, featuring songs like «American Teenager», «Strangers», «A House In Nebraska», and «Ptolemaea». The album drew acclaim for pairing pop songwriting instincts with slow-burning, atmospheric production and unflinching subject matter involving trauma, religion, and Southern Gothic imagery.

Beyond the Ethel Cain project, Anhedönia has released ambient and experimental music under other names, and her work is often discussed alongside a wave of internet-native artists reshaping indie and alternative music through deeply personal, narrative-driven songwriting.
