Ernst Busch

Ernst Busch was a German actor and singer, one of the most prominent voices of the German workers' movement and socialist song culture of the 20th century. Rising to prominence during the Weimar Republic, he became closely associated with the political theatre and cabaret scenes in Berlin, working alongside figures such as Bertolt Brecht and Hanns Eisler. His deep, gravelly baritone and direct, unsentimental delivery made him the definitive interpreter of agitprop and workers' anthems.

Busch's repertoire centered on songs of anti-fascist resistance, anti-war protest, and pro-Soviet solidarity, including material connected to the Spanish Civil War, in which he was personally involved supporting the International Brigades. After the war he settled in East Germany, where his stature as a committed socialist artist allowed him to become a central figure in the GDR's cultural institutions, including work with record labels that shaped the country's official musical output.

His recordings remain historical documents of 20th-century socialist and anti-fascist song, valued both for their political content and for Busch's distinctive vocal style, which influenced generations of protest singers in the German-speaking world.
