Eric Carmen

Eric Carmen is an American singer-songwriter from Cleveland, Ohio, best known as the founder and frontman of the power-pop band Raspberries before launching a successful solo career in the mid-1970s. His classically trained background — he studied violin as a child — shaped his gift for sweeping melodies and orchestral arrangements, most famously heard in the piano ballad «All By Myself», which borrowed a theme from Rachmaninoff and became a signature hit.

Carmen built his solo catalogue around a mix of lush, romantic balladry and driving power-pop energy, scoring further hits with «Never Gonna Fall in Love Again» and «She Did It». His sound bridged the gap between 1960s British Invasion pop craftsmanship and the more polished, radio-friendly rock of the 1970s and 1980s.

He found a new generation of listeners in the 1980s through film soundtrack work, delivering «Make Me Lose Control» and, most notably, «Hungry Eyes» for the Dirty Dancing soundtrack, which became one of his best-known songs. Across his career Carmen remained a meticulous melodicist whose fusion of classical influence and pop sensibility left a lasting mark on American rock radio.
