About the artist
Ennio Morricone (1928–2020) was an Italian composer and conductor, one of the most influential film-score writers in cinema history. Trained at Rome's Santa Cecilia Conservatory as a trumpeter and arranger, he began in commercial pop and radio orchestration before turning to film music in the early 1960s. His breakthrough came through his collaboration with director Sergio Leone on the «Dollars Trilogy», where scores like «Il buono, il brutto, il cattivo» redefined the spaghetti western with unconventional instrumentation — whistling, electric guitar, cracking whips, wordless choir — placed against sweeping orchestral themes.
Over a career spanning more than five decades, Morricone scored over 500 films and television productions across nearly every genre, from westerns to political thrillers to romantic dramas. He continued his partnership with Leone on «Once Upon a Time in the West» and «Once Upon a Time in America», and worked with directors including Bernardo Bertolucci, Pier Paolo Pasolini, Brian De Palma and Quentin Tarantino, for whose «The Hateful Eight» he won his only competitive Academy Award in 2016, after two earlier honorary Oscars.
Morricone's music is marked by melodic instantly-recognizable themes, unusual sonic textures, and a willingness to blend classical technique with pop and avant-garde elements. Pieces such as «L'estasi dell'oro» and his score for «The Mission» are considered among the most influential in film music, and his work continues to shape how composers approach genre scoring today.
