Enigma

Enigma is a musical project created in 1990 by Romanian-German producer and composer Michael Cretu, working with collaborators such as Sandra and a rotating group of writers and vocalists over the years. Rather than a conventional band, Enigma has always functioned as a studio-based project centered on Cretu's production vision, blending Gregorian chant samples, world music elements, ambient textures and downtempo dance rhythms into a distinctive, mystical atmospheric sound.

The project's debut album, MCMXC a.D., released in 1990, became a global phenomenon on the strength of the single Sadeness (Part I), which paired chanted vocals with a slow dance groove and helped define a new, new-age-adjacent strand of pop music for the era. Enigma continued this formula on later albums, drawing on spiritual and often deliberately provocative religious imagery, with tracks such as Return to Innocence achieving major international chart success and becoming widely associated with the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

Enigma's influence extended well beyond its own catalogue, helping popularize the fusion of ambient, ethnic and electronic music that shaped later new-age and chillout genres. The project has released a series of albums across the following decades, with Michael Cretu retaining core creative control while working alongside a changing cast of vocalists and musicians.
