About the artist
Elvis Crespo is a Puerto Rican singer and songwriter widely credited with helping bring merengue to a massive international mainstream audience in the late 1990s. He first gained recognition as part of the group Grupo Manía before launching a hugely successful solo career with his 1998 debut album Suavemente, whose title track became one of the biggest Latin dance hits of the decade and a defining merengue anthem worldwide.
His sound is built on the fast, brass-and-accordion-driven rhythms of traditional merengue paired with radio-friendly pop songwriting, heard on hits like «Tu Sonrisa», «Píntame», «Luna Llena» and «Nuestra Canción». Crespo helped popularize merengue far beyond the Caribbean and Latin American markets, contributing to the genre's crossover moment in US Latin pop during the late 1990s and early 2000s.
Over a long career he has released numerous albums and continued to record and perform merengue, later also exploring bachata and other tropical styles, cementing his reputation as one of the genre's most recognizable ambassadors. His holiday recording «El Burrito Sabanero» has also become a perennial favorite during the Christmas season in Latin America.
