About the artist
Ella Fitzgerald (1917–1996) was an American jazz singer born in Newport News, Virginia, and raised largely in Yonkers, New York. Discovered at an amateur night at the Apollo Theater in Harlem, she rose to prominence singing with Chick Webb's orchestra in the 1930s before launching a solo career that would span six decades. Widely called the First Lady of Song and the Queen of Jazz, she became one of the most celebrated vocalists in American popular music, achieving success across a music industry that was often hostile to Black artists.
Fitzgerald was renowned for her pure tone, precise diction, and remarkable pitch, as well as her virtuosic scat singing, in which she improvised wordless, horn-like vocal lines with the fluency of a jazz instrumentalist. Her interpretations of standards by Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Duke Ellington, and other composers, gathered in her celebrated Songbook recordings, helped define the American popular song canon for generations of listeners and musicians.
Over her career she recorded extensively with major bandleaders and musicians, including long collaborations with Duke Ellington, and won numerous Grammy Awards, becoming a pioneering Black woman honored at the top level of the American recording industry. Songs closely associated with her, such as «Summertime», «Dream a Little Dream of Me», and «Cry Me a River», remain touchstones of the jazz vocal repertoire.
