Elaine Stritch

Elaine Stritch (1925–2014) was an American actress and singer best known for her decades-long career on Broadway and in television. Born in Detroit, Michigan, she trained early on stage and became one of the defining interpreters of the American musical theatre songbook, particularly through her association with composer Stephen Sondheim.

Her signature moment came in the 1970 musical «Company», where her rendition of «The Ladies Who Lunch» became legendary for its raw, world-weary delivery and became a template for how the song is performed to this day. Her voice was less about pure vocal beauty than about acting through song — dry, wry, brutally honest, delivered with impeccable comic timing. This approach also defined her performances of standards like «I'm Still Here» from «Follies».

Beyond the stage, Stritch was known to wider audiences for her role as Alec Baldwin's mother on the sitcom «30 Rock» and for her acclaimed one-woman show «Elaine Stritch at Liberty», which chronicled her life and career.
