Edward Elgar

Sir Edward Elgar (June 2, 1857 – February 23, 1934) was an English composer widely regarded as one of the most important figures in British classical music, whose works helped establish a distinctly national voice within the late-Romantic tradition. Largely self-taught, he rose from provincial obscurity in Worcestershire to national and international prominence around the turn of the twentieth century.

His best-known works include the «Enigma Variations», an orchestral set portraying friends through musical portraits, and the «Pomp and Circumstance» marches, whose first march contains the famous melody later set as «Land of Hope and Glory» — a piece deeply woven into British national ceremony. His large-scale choral work «The Dream of Gerontius» and concertos for violin and cello further cemented his reputation, alongside intimate pieces like «Salut d'Amour» and songs such as «As Torrents in Summer» and «For the Fallen».

Elgar's music combines lush orchestration, nobilmente melodic grandeur and an undercurrent of melancholy, making him the central figure bridging Victorian and modern British music. He was appointed Master of the King's Musick in 1924, cementing his status as a national institution whose influence extended well beyond his own lifetime.
