About the artist

Eddy Grant is a Guyanese-British musician, singer, songwriter and producer, born in Guyana and raised in London from childhood. He first found success in the 1960s as a member of The Equals, a multiracial pop-rock group known for the hit «Baby Come Back», before launching a solo career in the 1970s that fused reggae, soca, calypso, funk and rock into a style distinctly his own. Grant became one of the most commercially successful black British artists of his era, building his own recording studio and label, Ice Records, which gave him unusual creative independence.

His best-known solo work arrived in the early 1980s, when «Electric Avenue» became a worldwide hit, driven by its blend of reggae rhythm, synthesizer hooks and social commentary referencing the Brixton riots. He followed it with other charting singles built around danceable grooves layered with political and social themes, a hallmark of his songwriting throughout the decade. «Gimme Hope Jo’anna» is another signature track, a pointed critique of apartheid-era South Africa that became an anthem against the regime while still working as pure pop.

Grant’s sound is characterized by warm analog production, syncopated Caribbean rhythms and an ear for melody that let serious lyrical content sit comfortably inside radio-friendly arrangements. Beyond his own catalogue, he has been influential as a bridge between Caribbean musical traditions and mainstream Western pop, and his catalogue continues to be sampled and referenced by later artists across genres.
