Duffy

Duffy, born Aimee Anne Duffy on June 23, 1984, in Bangor, Wales, is a Welsh singer and songwriter who rose to prominence in the late 2000s with a soul-inflected pop sound that drew heavily on 1960s girl-group and Motown influences. She was introduced to Jeannette Lee of Rough Trade Records, leading to a recording deal in 2007, and released her debut album Rockferry in March 2008.

Rockferry became a global phenomenon, ranking as the world's fourth best-selling album of 2008 according to the IFPI, propelled by international hits like «Mercy» and «Warwick Avenue». Her voice — smoky, retro, and emotionally direct — placed her alongside a wave of British female vocalists reviving vintage soul and pop sounds for a contemporary audience. She followed up with a second album, Endlessly, in 2010.

After Endlessly, Duffy stepped away from the public eye for roughly a decade. In December 2019 she hinted at a return on social media, and in February 2020 she publicly addressed her long absence, revealing she had survived being drugged, held captive, and raped, and had used the intervening years to heal. Her openness about that ordeal added a new layer to the story of an artist whose early success had made her one of the defining pop-soul voices of her era.
