About the artist
Dr. John, born Malcolm John Rebennack Jr. in New Orleans, Louisiana, was one of the defining voices of that city's music. Working as a session pianist and guitarist through the late 1950s and 1960s, he absorbed the blend of blues, R&B, jazz and Mardi Gras Indian rhythms that would become his signature. His breakthrough came under the psychedelic voodoo persona Dr. John the Night Tripper, launched with the album «Gris-Gris», which fused swamp funk with theatrical, ritualistic stage shows drawing on medicine-show traditions and voodoo imagery.
His biggest commercial success arrived with «Right Place, Wrong Time», a funk-inflected hit that remains his most recognized recording, alongside staples like «Iko Iko» and «Such a Night». Rebennack's piano playing carried the rolling, syncopated New Orleans style associated with predecessors like Professor Longhair, filtered through his own gritty vocal delivery and eccentric songwriting.
Over a career spanning more than two decades of recording, he won multiple Grammy Awards and was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He remained a touring and recording fixture of New Orleans music until his death in 2019, celebrated as an ambassador of the city's sound.
