Donovan

Donovan is a Scottish singer-songwriter and guitarist who became one of the defining figures of 1960s British folk and psychedelic pop. Emerging from the London folk club scene in the mid-1960s, he first gained attention as a Bob Dylan-esque acoustic troubadour with «Catch the Wind», before rapidly evolving into a pioneer of psychedelic music.

Working with producer Mickie Most, Donovan crafted a string of era-defining hits including «Sunshine Superman», «Mellow Yellow», «Hurdy Gurdy Man», and «Season of the Witch», blending folk, jazz, blues, and Eastern-influenced instrumentation into a distinctive, whimsical sound. His music captured the flower-power spirit of the time and he was closely associated with figures like The Beatles, with whom he studied Transcendental Meditation in India.

Donovan's genre-blurring approach — folding in raga-inspired guitar work, jazz phrasing, and orchestral touches — helped shape the sound of psychedelia and influenced countless later folk-rock and singer-songwriter artists. He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012, recognition of his lasting impact on popular music.
