Donna Summer

Donna Summer, born LaDonna Adrian Gaines in Boston, Massachusetts, was the definitive queen of disco and one of the most successful female artists of the late 1970s. After moving to Germany to perform in a production of the musical Hair, she met producers Giorgio Moroder and Pete Bellotte, and their collaboration would define an entire era of dance music. Her breakout single, «Love to Love You Baby», released in 1975, was one of disco's first mainstream sensations, and the extended, sensual moaning vocal became instantly notorious and iconic.

Summer and Moroder pushed dance music into new sonic territory with «I Feel Love» in 1977, a track built on pulsing synthesizers that is widely credited as a foundational moment for electronic dance music, influencing everything from synth-pop to techno. She followed with a string of hits blending disco, R&B, rock, and pop, including «Last Dance», «Hot Stuff», «Bad Girls», «MacArthur Park», and «On the Radio», demonstrating a vocal and stylistic range far beyond disco's typical boundaries.

Her live, expressive voice and ability to move between sultry ballads and driving uptempo anthems made her a defining artist of her era, and later hits like «She Works Hard for the Money» showed her continued relevance into the 1980s.
