Don McLean

Don McLean, born October 2, 1945, is an American singer-songwriter best known for his 1971 album American Pie, whose title track became one of the most iconic songs in American music. Before finding success, he toured with folk legend Pete Seeger, who influenced his approach to live performance. His debut album, Tapestry, was rejected dozens of times before finally being released, setting the stage for the breakthrough that followed.

«American Pie» topped the Billboard Hot 100 for weeks in 1972 and, at over eight minutes long, remained the longest song ever to reach number one for decades. The same album produced «Vincent», a tribute to painter Vincent van Gogh that became another signature hit. McLean's songwriting blended folk storytelling with accessible melodies, and his catalog extends beyond his best-known singles to songs like «Empty Chairs», «Crossroads» and «Castles in the Air».

As a songwriter, McLean also wrote hits recorded by other artists, including «And I Love You So» for Perry Como and «The Grave» for George Michael, extending his influence well beyond his own recordings.
