Doe Maar

Doe Maar is a Dutch band formed in 1978 that became the defining act of Nederpop, the wave of Dutch-language pop that broke through in the early 1980s. Blending ska, reggae, and punk energy with catchy, plainspoken Dutch lyrics, the group — anchored by songwriters Henny Vrienten and Ernst Jansz — turned everyday observations and teenage emotion into massive hits. Their sound stood out for its brightness and rhythmic bounce at a time when Dutch radio was dominated by English-language music.

By the early 1980s Doe Maar had become a genuine youth phenomenon in the Netherlands, with screaming-fan scenes compared to Beatlemania. Songs like «Sinds 1 Dag Of 2 (32 Jaar)», «De Bom», and «Smoorverliefd» became standards of Dutch pop culture, and their albums regularly topped the charts. The intensity of that fame contributed to the band splitting up in 1984 at the height of their popularity.

Doe Maar reunited several times from 2000 onward for concert series and a new studio album, introducing their catalogue to new generations. Their commercial run remains one of the strongest in Dutch-language music history, with multiple studio and compilation albums reaching number one, cementing their status as pioneers who proved homegrown Dutch pop could dominate at home.
