About the artist

Doc Watson, born Arthel Lane Watson in 1923 in Deep Gap, North Carolina, was one of the most influential American folk guitarists of the twentieth century. Blind from early childhood, he built a career on an extraordinary command of the instrument, developing a flatpicking technique that translated fiddle-tune melodies to guitar at speeds and with a clarity few had achieved before him.

Discovered during the 1960s folk revival, Watson became a central figure in bringing Appalachian traditional music — old-time ballads, bluegrass, blues, and gospel — to national and international audiences. His repertoire included staples like «Tom Dooley», «Deep River Blues», and «Shady Grove», songs that showcased both his virtuosic playing and his warm, plainspoken singing voice. He often performed and recorded with his son Merle Watson, and later with grandson Richard Watson, cementing a family legacy in traditional American music.

Watson's influence extended far beyond folk circles, shaping generations of guitarists across bluegrass, country, and Americana. He was honored with the National Medal of Arts in 1997 and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2004, recognition of a career built on preserving and revitalizing the traditional songs of the American South while pushing the technical possibilities of acoustic guitar.
