About the artist
DJ Drama, born Tyree Cinque Simmons on April 22, 1978 in Philadelphia, is one of the most influential figures in mixtape culture. He rose to prominence in the 2000s through his «Gangsta Grillz» mixtape series, a format that blended DJ-hosted commentary with exclusive tracks and became a launching pad for numerous Southern rap artists. As a founding member of the Aphilliates Music Group alongside DJ Don Cannon and DJ Sense, he helped define the sound and rollout strategy of an entire era of hip-hop.
Drama built close working relationships with artists including T.I., Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, Jim Jones, Saigon, and Little Brother, hosting mixtapes that often doubled as career-defining moments for the rappers involved. In 2007 he and DJ Cannon were arrested on RICO charges tied to mixtape distribution, a case that became a flashpoint in debates over mixtape legality in the industry. He continued releasing his own albums as well, including Quality Street Music, home to the track «We In This Bitch», a concept he traced back to his work hosting Young Jeezy's Trap or Die mixtape.
Beyond mixtapes, DJ Drama has functioned as a tastemaker and executive, helping break artists and shape the sound of mainstream Southern and trap-influenced rap. His catalog reflects deep collaborative ties across the genre rather than a singular solo sound, with his reputation resting on curation, hosting, and artist development as much as production.
