DJ Drama, nacido Tyree Cinque Simmons el 22 de abril de 1978 en Filadelfia, es una de las figuras más influyentes en la cultura del mixtape. Alcanzó notoriedad en la década de 2000 con su serie de mixtapes «Gangsta Grillz», un formato que combinaba comentarios del DJ con temas exclusivos y que se convirtió en trampolín para numerosos artistas del rap sureño. Como miembro fundador de Aphilliates Music Group junto a DJ Don Cannon y DJ Sense, ayudó a definir el sonido y la estrategia de lanzamiento de toda una era del hip-hop.
Drama construyó relaciones de trabajo cercanas con artistas como T.I., Young Jeezy, Lil Wayne, Jim Jones, Saigon y Little Brother, presentando mixtapes que a menudo se convertían en momentos clave para las carreras de esos raperos. En 2007, él y DJ Cannon fueron arrestados bajo cargos RICO relacionados con la distribución de mixtapes, un caso que se volvió emblemático en los debates sobre la legalidad de esta práctica en la industria.
