About the artist
Dionne Warwick is an American singer whose voice became one of the defining sounds of 1960s pop and soul. Born in East Orange, New Jersey, she rose to fame through her long partnership with songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David, who wrote a string of sophisticated, orchestrally rich hits tailored to her elegant, technically precise delivery — among them «Walk On By», «I Say a Little Prayer», «Alfie», and «What the World Needs Now Is Love».
Her style bridged pop, R&B, and adult-contemporary sensibilities, favoring subtle phrasing and emotional restraint over vocal showiness, which set her apart from many of her soul contemporaries. In the 1980s she found a second commercial peak with «That's What Friends Are For», a charity single recorded with Elton John, Gladys Knight, and Stevie Wonder that raised funds for AIDS research and became one of the best-selling singles of the decade.
A multiple Grammy Award winner, Warwick also had a notable career as a television host and humanitarian, later serving in ambassadorial roles connected to global health and food security. She is a cousin of Cissy Houston and Whitney Houston, placing her within one of American music's most influential family lineages, and remains widely cited as an inspiration by generations of singers.
