About the artist
Dinah Washington, born Ruth Lee Jones in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was one of the most influential American vocalists of the mid-20th century, celebrated as the «Queen of the Blues». Raised in Chicago, she began singing gospel in church before moving into jazz and blues clubs, where she caught the attention of bandleader Lionel Hampton, who hired her as his band's vocalist in the mid-1940s. She soon left to build a solo career that made her one of the most commercially successful Black artists of her era, scoring numerous R&B chart hits.
Washington's voice was remarkable for its clarity, precision and emotional directness, allowing her to move fluidly between blues, jazz, R&B, gospel and pop without losing her identity. Her biggest crossover hit, «What a Diff'rence a Day Made», became a pop standard, while «This Bitter Earth» and «Teach Me Tonight» showcased her ability to bring aching vulnerability to a lyric. She recorded prolifically, often backed by top jazz musicians, blurring genre lines at a time when the industry preferred strict categories.
Her influence extended to generations of singers who admired her phrasing and emotional honesty. She died in 1963 at just 39, but her legacy was cemented with inductions into the Alabama Music Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, recognitions of her role as a foundational figure bridging blues, jazz and popular song.
