DeVotchKa

DeVotchKa is an American band formed in Denver, Colorado in the late 1990s, led by singer and multi-instrumentalist Nick Urata alongside Tom Hagerman, Jeanie Schroder, and Shawn King. Their sound draws on gypsy, mariachi, Balkan brass, and classical influences woven into a cinematic, melancholic form of indie rock, built around Urata's theremin, bouzouki, and tuba lines alongside sweeping strings.

The band began as a backing group for burlesque and cabaret shows, touring with performer Dita Von Teese in their early years, which shaped their theatrical, orchestral live presentation. They built a devoted underground following through independent releases before signing with Anti- Records.

DeVotchKa reached a much wider audience when their song «How It Ends» appeared in trailers and television placements, and especially after Urata composed the acclaimed score for the film Little Miss Sunshine, which drew heavily on the band's existing catalog. They have collaborated with artists including Calexico and toured internationally alongside Gogol Bordello, cementing their place at the crossroads of indie rock and world music.
