About the artist
Deniece Williams, born June Deniece Chandler, is an American singer, songwriter, and producer whose smooth, agile soprano made her one of soul and R&B's most distinctive vocal stylists from the 1970s onward. Before launching her solo career, she spent time in the early 1970s as a backing vocalist for Stevie Wonder as part of his group Wonderlove, lending her voice to landmark albums including Talking Book and Songs in the Key of Life, an apprenticeship that shaped her ear for melody and vocal arrangement.
As a solo artist she became known for a warm, church-rooted delivery paired with polished, radio-friendly production, moving fluidly between soul, gospel, and pop. She scored major hits and duet successes, working with collaborators across the R&B and pop world, and her voice carried both tender ballads and uptempo dance-floor material with equal ease. Her recordings of the late 1970s and 1980s helped define a smooth soul sound that bridged the gap between classic soul phrasing and the emerging pop-crossover style of the era.
Her song «Let's Hear It for the Boy», featured in the film Footloose, became one of her signature hits and remains her best-known recording internationally, while tracks like «Silly» and «Free» showcase the more understated, jazz-inflected side of her catalog. Williams also embraced gospel music later in her career, reflecting a lifelong grounding in faith that ran alongside her secular success.
