About the artist
Deep Blue Something is an alternative rock band formed in 1991 in Denton, Texas, by brothers Todd and Toby Pipes along with Clay Bergus. The band's sound sits within the melodic, guitar-driven alt-rock of the mid-1990s American college-rock scene, favoring hook-laden verses and simple, conversational lyrics over heavier or more experimental textures. By the time of their second album, «Home» (1995), drummer John Kirtland and guitarist Kirk Tatum had joined as permanent members, rounding out the classic lineup.
The band is best known for «Breakfast at Tiffany’s», the breakout single from «Home», which became a massive radio and MTV hit and remains one of the defining one-hit-wonder singles of the alt-rock era, built around its instantly memorable chorus referencing the Audrey Hepburn film. Other songs from the same album, including «Josey» and «Halo», gave the record additional depth beyond its signature single, though none matched its commercial reach. Tracks like «Pullman, Washington» and «Everything» further reflect the band's knack for narrative, place-specific songwriting.
Deep Blue Something disbanded in 2001 but reunited in 2014 and has remained active in some form since, continuing to tour and record on a smaller scale. While their broader catalog never repeated the success of «Breakfast at Tiffany’s», the band retains a loyal following built on the strength of that single and the warm, guitar-pop songwriting that defined their mid-90s output.
