About the artist

David Seville was the stage pseudonym of Ross Bagdasarian Sr. (1919–1972), an American songwriter, singer, and producer best remembered as the creator of Alvin and the Chipmunks. Bagdasarian pioneered the sped-up vocal technique achieved by recording at half speed and playing back at normal speed, which he used to give the Chipmunks their signature high-pitched voices — an innovation that was novel and technically distinctive for its era.

Under the David Seville name, he scored his own novelty hits before launching the Chipmunks, most famously «Witch Doctor» (1958), a chart-topping single built on the same sped-up vocal gimmick that would define his later, more famous creation. The success of «Witch Doctor» led directly to the debut of Alvin and the Chipmunks later that same year, with songs like «The Chipmunk Song» becoming holiday standards.

Bagdasarian's work sits squarely in the novelty-pop tradition, blending comic songwriting with early studio-technology experimentation. His son, Ross Bagdasarian Jr., continued the Chipmunks franchise after his father's death, extending a musical legacy built on a single clever production trick turned into decades of family entertainment.
