Damas Gratis

Damas Gratis is an Argentine cumbia villera band formed in San Fernando, Greater Buenos Aires, in 2000 by keyboardist, songwriter and singer Pablo Lescano. The group is widely credited as one of the founders of cumbia villera, a raw, street-level offshoot of Argentine cumbia that emerged from the poorest neighborhoods of Buenos Aires in the late 1990s, replacing the genre's traditional romantic themes with blunt lyrics about poverty, police, drugs, betrayal and everyday life in the villas.

Musically, Damas Gratis built its sound around synthesizer lines drawing on the guitar-driven cumbia of Peru's Los Mirlos and the electronic effects of Mexican cumbia sonidera, layered over the accordion-and-guiro rhythmic base typical of Argentine cumbia. Lescano's use of cheap electronic keyboards to mimic and distort other instruments became a signature of the whole villera movement, and his gravelly, conversational vocal delivery set the template many later cumbia villera acts followed.

Songs such as «Sufre Cheto», «Ingrata» and «Se Te Ve La Tanga» turned the band into a fixture of Argentine popular culture, played constantly in clubs, buses and street parties (bailantas) well beyond the villas where the genre originated. Damas Gratis remains active decades after its founding, with Lescano continuing as its central figure, and is regarded as a foundational act that shaped the sound of cumbia across Argentina and neighboring countries.
